Local Organizations

Friends of Scarborough Marsh - "The Friends of Scarborough Marsh is a nonprofit coalition of concerned citizens, landowners, businesses, state and federal agencies, environmental organizations, and others. Established in 2000, it is an all-volunteer group dedicated to the conservation, protection, restoration, and enhancement of the Scarborough Marsh. Our efforts include:  projects and studies to understand challenges and potential for restoration; land conservation initiatives; education and public outreach events like clean-ups and our lecture series."
Scarborough Land Trust - SLT is a private, non-profit, community-based organization.  It conserves land where natural resources, scenic vistas and historical significance offer unique value to our community. This includes: land conservation (working with willing landowners and community partners to conserve Scarborough land to provide public access and to protect wildlife habitat), land stewardship  building and maintaining trails, monitoring lands, managing forests and wildlife habitat, and ensuring these lands thrive today, and for future generations), and connecting people to the land (conducting guided nature walks and other programs to connect more people to Scarborough’s beautiful and diverse landscapes).
Town of Scarborough Conservation Commission - "The Conservation Commission's primary responsibility is to increase awareness of the value of our natural resources, work to identify and reduce potential damage to these natural areas and to proactively work with Town Staff, other committees, and local organizations to encourage sustainable stewardship of these resources." from Mission Statement
Town of Scarborough Parks and Land Conservation Board - "Purpose: To develop a written Acquisition Evaluation Process (AEP) consistent with the Parks and Land Conservation Bond Task Force Report which will be used to evaluate potential acquisitions in a consistent manner. The Board will maintain a goal and assign priority to acquisitions where private funding can be used to match public funding. To recommend and advise the Town Council on land acquisitions identified by the Acquisition Evaluation Process. To recommend any conditions, restrictions, or protective measures appropriate for Council considerations on land identified for acquisition."
Scarborough Historical Society - "The Scarborough Historical Society was founded in 1961 to collect, preserve and exhibit items of historical significance to Scarborough and make them available to the public. Many of the town’s historic artifacts were being sold or removed, oftentimes out of state, and the Society was determined to reverse this trend. The mission of the Scarborough Historical Society is to inform the community of its history by collecting, preserving, and exhibiting materials associated with its past. Our collections are extensive. There are farming equipment and tools from bygone coopers and cobblers, quilts and clothes from past eras. There are class pictures and other objects from early school days, as well as photographs of people, homes, buildings, and related documents including bibles and family genealogies."
